One of the greatest obsessions of the locals is their Australian Rules home town team the Geelong Cats. Geelong owes it's name to it's Governor Richard Burke. The name stems from the local indigenous aboriginal word Jillong which pertains to... land or cliff.

Geelong was first surveyed just 3 weeks after Melbourne in the year 1838. Earliest trade was mainly in wool, ropes and paper. Geelong was pronounced a city in 1910.
