The city of
Geelong is found on Corio Bay. The Corio Bay is a south
western inlet of Port Phillip. The city is enhanced by the
Barwon River which makes it's way through the south of
the city to eventually empty into Bass Straight at
Barwon Heads.
Geelong is 75
kilometres south west of Melbourne and is Australia's
12th largest city in population and the second largest
city in Victoria ( second only to the state capital ) In
good seeing conditions it's possible to see the Melbourne
skyline across Port Phillip.
Geelongs average rainfall measures 552 mm
and has an average maximum temperature of a beautifully balmy 26
degress celsius in the Summer months whilst in winter the
range is typically between 5 and 14
degress.
One of the
greatest obsessions of the locals is their Australian
Rules home town team the Geelong Cats. Geelong owes
it's name to it's Governor Richard Burke. The name
stems from the local indigenous aboriginal word
Jillong
which pertains to... land or
cliff.
Geelong
was first surveyed just 3 weeks after Melbourne in
the year 1838. Earliest trade was mainly in wool,
ropes and paper. Geelong was pronounced a city in
1910.
